The Search for Narnia
In a large convention hall, two people sat among a sea of lavish chairs facing a podium. The lights dimmed, and an old woman shuffled on stage. She began:
“Hello and welcome to the sixtieth anniversary for the International Search Committee of Entrances to Narnia, or ISCEN. I am Janice Whitefield, the founder and president.
“Sixty-three years ago, my grandmother read me "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe". After we finished the book, she told me, in all seriousness, “Janny, be careful around the wardrobe – never know when you’ll be swept into Narnia”. I believe Granny would be proud to know that I dedicated my life to a cause founded upon her words.
“Now for the primary purpose of this meeting: MacLeod Furnishing (or as it recently became, MacLeod Wardrobes) has always been our faithful sponsor. Unfortunately, Mr. MacLeod informed me that he has grown wealthy off ISCEN and is retiring, thus, he no longer need sponsor us.
“Membership levels have always been rather low, to say the most, and despite the £250 monthly membership fee, we are unable to make ends meet.
“Therefore, it is with my deepest regret that I end the existence of ISCEN, though I know that the impact of this committee will far outlast her years. I thank you all for your continued support and bid you a fond farewell”.
And with that, Mrs. Whitefield stepped down from the podium, hobbled to the backstage door, and, with a mournful glance over her shoulder, proceeded to open it.
She then disappeared into the doorframe.

Thanks for this piece, Gabriella. I particular enjoyed reading the introduction–"a sea of lavish chairs" and an old woman "shuffling on stage." Interesting choice to focus on the end of this club and seeing the club wither away. I really got a sense of what this club was and what type of people joined it. The woman leaving everything at the door with a glance was also a cool way to end the scene. Thanks again.
