Drowned Hope

The cool mist of ocean water washed over the small mountain village. The tangy mist unexpected after years of hot springs and small streams being the only water around. Villagers ran past me to climb onto rooftops, their poorly built huts quickly eroding under the unforgiving waves. The trees and fields that lined the small foothills were long submerged, generations of human presence, wiped from the surface like footsteps after a storm. But gray clouds had not just emerged, the storm had been brewing for decades. The sea creeping on us for years, ignored with the hope that one day we would wake up and the water would have pulled back, revealing our forgotten memories. But alas, the waves kept crashing and slowly we all slipped beneath the icy surface.

Just a Normal Day
Word Count: 130

The birds singing, the sun shining, the sun rising from the east, the smoke filling the air, it seemed like a normal day. I was walking around the island of Maui. I smell the ocean, but something was wrong. The smell is much stronger than I remember. I blinked. I opened my eyes and found terror and fear all around me. Everyone was screaming and running away from the ocean. I went to see what was happening. Everyone told me to go back and run. I saw what I feared would happen. The water had started to drown my home. I tried to save my belongings, but I was too late. I fell asleep in my house for the last time. I woke up somewhere I have never seen before.
