Round 15: Kenzy

Prompt:
We are often told not to do things such as walking under a ladder or stepping on the cracks of the road. Where did all these superstitions come from though? Write a flash fiction story about how some of these very popular superstitions arose.

Word Limit:
110-130 words (no more, no less)

Chopsticks

“My food, IS IT READY YET?” bellows the man from behind the wall. “Yes dear, the sashimi will be ready any moment now,” replies his wife, an old Japanese lady. “Good,” he says, appearing at the entrance, filling up the space with his big, burly physique. He grunts as he takes a seat at the cherry wood table and begins to eat. He dips the dim sum in soy sauce and swallows it in one bite. He inhales the noodles, letting out a loud belch. When he is done, he wipes his mouth and stabs the chopsticks into the remainder of the fried rice. He gets up to leave and falls to the ground immediately. His face begins to turn purple as he grabs at the folds of his neck...

Just to clarify, my superstition was, “don’t sick your chopsticks straight up because it brings death.” I wanted to show how superstitions can come from something totally unrelated.

Broken Mirrors are bad luck
Sunday, February 18, 1842.
Dear diary,
Today the craziest thing happened. While mother, father, brother and I were at church my mother held a mirror in her hand to check her hair. A man wanting to great the pastor badly run from beside her, hit her, dropped her mirror, broke it. We thought that it just a simple piece of glass that broke. We were wrong. This day was so bad and horrible. Papa tripped and broke his leg. Mama fainted 5 times. Brother lost many of his toys and I broke the big mirror. Mama thinks that the evil spirit is haunting us with bad luck because we broke the piece of glass that it can see us through.

Poison in the wind

It was a beautiful day, with a bright sun and a light breeze. The weather was warm, and the chirping of the birds outside of my home lead me to the window beside my bed. An abnormal amount of birds benefited on my juniper berry tree. Many of them swarmed by my window, and it seemed as if they were searching for something inside. That is when a very large black bird hovered in front of me, peering right into my eyes. Suddenly, he left, followed by all of the other birds, chirping in a rather unusual matter. They sang like an orchestra, with trumpets and flutes and trombones. Their sound came louder and closer, until I heard a shatter. They stormed into my house and overthrew me to the ground.
