Today was supposed the best day of my life. I wore my favorite, most expensive svelte and elegant dress with jewelry, and I was waiting, waiting for the gates of the mansion I was living in to finally open. I wanted to see my dad driving in the ostentatious luxury car I had asked for my sixteenth birthday. Just as about the gates were starting to open, something, like a VR set, slid of my head. At first, I was blinded by the light, but then I felt my heart climb up to my throat. I saw blank faces with eyeballs gawking at me. I rubbed my eyes, and I rubbed them once again more vigorously. “This has to be a bad dream,” I thought, "I was about to receive my present." Suddenly, I heard the booming cheery voice of a late-night TV show producer announce, “Jolly good show Nataly, but your time is up.”

“Alexa, play piano music.” Harris glanced at his keyboard in the corner. “Loudly.” Schubert started. While his parents did the crossword in the kitchen below, Harris Edwards sat in bed, feeling his life disintegrate. He stared at the card in his hands:

REAL-TV, Inc.
“The Harris Show”
Executive Producers // Paul and Millie Edwards

Slowly, Alexa decrescendoed to silence. Harris could hear his heartbeat – stifled and urgent like an underwater drum. Movements below. A chair pushed back from a table. The hissing protest of a cat returned to the floor. Impulsively, Harris unplugged his bedside lamp. A deadened glow filled his room. Lights…The webcam on his desk flickered and – was he imagining it? – turned to face him. Camera…He moved to the window and placed his hand on the latch. Action.

The Big Surprise

Today I turned the big 16, but the unbeaten gift I received was my first dream about my deceased dad. He was in a pitch-black room and all I could take away was that I’m living in a TV show and everyone’s lying to me, including mom. TV show…everyone’s lying…mom. I knew it, but this was the sign to leave. I took what I could without being too sketchy since the whole word is watching me. I rode on my bike, at this point not caring if they’re watching or not and biked to the exit of the dome, keeping in mind that anything that happens is fake. Suddenly, I was on the ground and the next thing I knew, I was in an inky-black room. “Dad?”
