Natural resources on Earth have been exhausted. At the same time, scientists found a new planet that is exactly the same as Earth, but everything is opposite. Grandpa Earl
“63 years ago when I was 14 years old scientist on home earth discovered this planet and thought that it would be a great place to live in. Just because it had more fuel and water and oxygen it doesn’t mean that it is a better planet. They put a bunch of us in a ship and took us here against our will. They took us away from our family and friends. They took us away from home. I miss the place where you sleep when it is dark and you are up when the sun is up. I miss eating breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening. I miss growing a year older on your birthday.” Grandpa Earl said.

This Isn’t Home

I just want to fall asleep,
but it feels like the whole universe outside is awake...
The silence is unsettling,
my only company is the shadows cast on the walls that surround me.
This is not home.
Home was back on earth,
where bitter seeds were burrowed into the soil,
into the skin of the earth,
sprouting,
and populating the land with tiny buds,
growing,
each one at its own pace,
not here,
under LED lights,
inside confined vessels,
with inadequate care
no, not here.
I stare into the ceiling,
unaware that I am holding my breath,
I exhale and fall back into the mattress,
weighted down by heavy blankets,
I stay there for a while,
until the tightness in my chest begins to ease,
and my consciousness slips away...
