Try Out Your Words

Round 8: Mr. Chris

Picture
1717, 1818, 1919, now 2020. The phenomonon only happens once every 101 years. And what a difference 101 years make.

Many of you might be writing resolutions for the new year. As you do so, consider what those resolutions might reveal about the time in which you live. For instance, students in 1919 likely did not have any resolutions about reducing their carbon footprint or limiting their time on Snapchat.

With this in mind, consider what resolutions might look like for a student at King's in 2121. Write one or more resolutions that illustrate this character's life 101 years from today.

-Word Count: 110 - 130 words (no more, no less)

Expectations:
-Remember that you are writing for the King's Academy community. Please be respectful of that community.
-Respect the word count

-Your work should have a title--this is not part of your word count.
-Include your full name and word count at the end of your submission.
-Have fun with this challenge.

Deadline:
22:00 Tuesday, January 7th

“Dear Mr. Chris,

Hope you’re having a nice winter break away from your students. I sat and wondered for a long time about my new year’s resolutions until I decided what my five goals are going to be. And here they are:
1- In 2121, I resolve to not only achieve 5 rushed resolutions
2- In 2121, I resolve to not set any specific resolutions
3- In 2121, I don’t resolve to keep my room clean all the time, or eat healthy all the time, or play sports every day.
4- In 2121, I resolve to not care about the goal as much as I care about the journey
5- And finally, in 2121, I resolve to do whatever I want.

Have a good rest of winter break”

Dear Self,
I come to you as a flash, glimpsing the sight not of the future but the past. I have deteriorated myself from enduring so much out of this world, that I decided I wanted to go back. Back to awaiting the feeling that came as gentle as the pistil of the flower brushing against my face, fostering all the petals from top to waist. I came back to commemorate what it is like to write a real resolution, for now in my year 2121 that idea has been tainted and infected. We currently live in a world where a student writes as a New Year’s resolution, “I want to build a time machine and go back, maybe then I could save humanity.” And that has a mournful bitterness that will forever last.

Congratulations to Yasmeen as our Round 8 winner. It doesn't appear the future looks too bright in 2121. She has the honor of creating the prompt for the next round. Keep your eyes open for it on Thursday afternoon.
