Prompt:
You are stuck on an island with no food and resources what would you do to escape?

Word Count:
300-350 words

a Lost Hope

I looked up from the stack of logs in front of me. The calm waves licked the edge of the orange shore. To my right stood a clump of tall, slightly curved trees. There large leaves cast a huge shadow across the shoreline. There branches were devoid of any fruit. I returned my attention to the wood in front of me, and tugged at the leaf that held the logs together. It immediately ripped in my hands. The wood fell back into an unorganized pile. I bit my tongue, forcing the scream back down my throat. I pulled another long, thick leaf from the pile next to me, and began to organize the wood into a flat rectangle again. My dry, cracked fingers fumbled. My shriveled up empty stomach dragged me down. The wind slapped my face. But my hands pushed on. The movements happened on there own now.
Place two logs next to each other, align them perfectly. Hold them together with a leaf, repeat.
It was simple, except for the fact that one wrong move would make the whole thing split apart. I grabbed the leaf, and carefully, wrapped it around the board-like structure. I slipped the end into a crack between the logs to hold it in place, then tugged at it to make sure it was wrapped tightly. The logs groaned as they scraped against each other, but their tight formation held. I let out a slow breath. The clashing of the waves grew to a crescendo in my ears. The chirping of distant birds reached me.
I stood up and stumbled for a few seconds before regaining my balance. My knees throbbed. I turned to the woods behind me. It was a solid mass of brown and green, no flowers or animals in sight. Even the chirping of the birds sounded miles away. A wave crashed onto the shore. I turned back as a wet coolness licked at my feet. The white wave was retreating. On its crest bobbed a brown figure, a makeshift raft being pulled away without its rider.

“ Everything hurts” I thought to myself as I took in a ragged breath that I hoped would be my last. That's right, hoped. Because there was no way I could take one more second on this devastating, harsh, and annoyingly bright island. After 20 days here I had come up with a theory that I had really died when my boat sank and this was just hell. It made sense because looking back there were just so many things I should have done, so many details I looked over that it makes me want to punch myself in the face. Oh what I would do for even a small portion of the food I had with me at the start of this horrible mess. I look up at the sky. It shouldn't be hard since I'm laying on my back , the heat of the sand scorching against my skin. but just tilting my up feels like rolling a huge rock up a hill.
“Well there's only one way off this island” I think. And I take a deep breath and let the soft sound of the waves crashing against the shore carry my small life away.

Congratulations Tia!
You are this week’s winner of the writing competition. I loved the detail you put into the beginning; it was captivating. It made me feel as if I was suffering on the Island. I loved how you described the waves throughout the story; especially when you likened it to music, it gave ebb and flow to your words.

Mar, I loved the tragedy in your story it is exactly how I would have felt if I found myself stuck on an Island. Your solution was brilliant when you let the reader know there was only one way off this Island; by giving the vast ocean your life.
