A Cozier Time

The wood burner had gone out, but Melissa could still feel the heat tingling on the hairs of her skin. Shadows of fire danced on the logs on the ceiling. Droning sounds of ambulances flared away as the child in the neighboring flat began to play the piano. A closer, more acute sound emerged from above her head, so close that her head recoiled back into the pelt couch.

“Five minutes left.”

His gruff and impatient voice tickled in her ear, with the sounds feeling vaguely familiar. Was it the microwave alarm?

“Wait..wait…five minutes until what?”

“Time’s up.”

His voice started to drown in the buzz of cicadas waking from their shells. Melissa’s eyes opened to distinct streaks of bright LED lights hanging from the ceiling. Her body remained inert. The earlier hazy warmth was replaced with the sudden numb and cold texture of the classroom desk.

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes

A sad bowl of cereal sat untouched in front of the girl as she held a spoon up to her face and stared at her reflection, the focal point, a pimple on her forehead. She tilted her head upwards and watched it grow bigger, back down, and it grew smaller. Unamused, she turned to set the spoon back down when the colours began to blend and spiral out of focus until she found herself staring at a different reflection.

She saw a family, gathered around a kitchen table, with breakfast spread across a gingham tablecloth. They spoke animatedly; she wondered about what. Warm light leaked through the window. It was all very bright and fuzzy, like something out of an old film. Everything came back into focus and they all turned to look at her. She gasped and the spoon fell from her grip and clattered to the kitchen floor.

A New Year Never Forgotten

The summer breeze brushed past Cora’s white sundress as she walked. She tucked her short chestnut hair behind her ear to keep it out of her forest-colored eyes. Turning her gaze to the beach houses in the distance, Cora watched as the setting sun cast beautiful oranges, pinks, and purples upon them. Soon enough, the vast evening sky would be glistening with bright celestial objects. “Let's get this party started!” Blaring music throbbed in the busy atmosphere. The night was alive. Three, two, one,… and with that, a burst of fiery sparks carpeted colorful gems igniting the otherwise black sky. For a split second, her heart sank. Pangs of pain shuddering her body brought her back to reality. As Cora visualized the agony on the other side, it dawned on her how blessed she was to be so far away. “Happy New Year everyone," she muttered wistfully.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for submitting those pieces. I really enjoyed reading all of them.
Oscar, I really love how you conveyed that feeling of being detached from reality. You’re descriptions and detail made me feel like I was in the moment, and that transition back to reality was very well written.
Lina, I love you’re attention to detail. The part when she was just playing with the spoon felt very relatable and quite accurate to what I would do with a spoon. I like how you kept it open ended.
Lamar, I love your vivid descriptions. It really felt like I was in the character’s shoes. I really like how you ended it.
It wasn’t easy to choose. They’re all great.
Congratulations Oscar! You are the winner for this round
