The Burning Sun

I am recalling the years, on this eve before I burn. Discoveries. I have had many, but none as important as the telescope. My last stand. My life, spent gazing at pulchritudinous rings of Saturn’s fire. Fire that will devour my soul at dawn. Tomorrow. Inspecting Venus, the different phases of life, starting out small, prosperous and happy it gives me hope. Then it grows larger like my woes. A space filled with stars, constellations of stars I know as intimately as the wrinkles on my face. Ambitious or arrogant; I am not sure. Should my words be as worthy of those of the Bible? The jagged mountains of the Moon, the obstacles I triumphed over. Space, my inspiration, my downfall. The first and last page of my memoir. I sacrificed my life to celebrate you and I would do so one hundred times over.

Jawad, what an imaginative scene you have painted for your readers. You are the winner this week. I love the compassion with which you you imbued the sun, a thing I mostly think of as neutral and unfeeling. Could I ask you to send me a prompt, a photo, and a photo credit by 19:00 today?

The Circle of Life

I see it all between the palms of my satiny fist. Muttering the insignificant first words the world will hear of me. I look up at the dim horizon, as the stars congregate above my face, like fruits emerging from the tree. The tree of life, that grows, with patience and passion. I descry it all with the nebula carved in my eye. Giving rise to a new soul from the scurrying dust of a past life. All as I whirl around myself orbiting the unknown. Orbiting the bigger cause and purpose of life. Just as the Earth orbits the Sun. I love it all when dawn turns to day. When the young universe of ours flourishes to red. I enjoy it all, as I open the present of today. Shimmering my alluring rays. I doubt it all as my light is about to fade. I cherish it when I get a taste of it all. Savoring the sweetness of fruits and the bitterness of roots. I recall it all as I am lost. Lost between the countless rows of useless clusters. I know it all, as I mutter my first significant words. I am nothing, but a black hole.

Jaafar, what a wonderful submission. I was really moved by the atmospheric perspective you are able to capture here. I award Jawad the winner this week, but your piece certainly deserves honorable mention. It's great to see you develop as a writer, and I hope you will continue to submit.
